 Southeast Michigan Community College Consortium

Educational Leaders in Economic & Workforce Transformation

The Southeast Michigan Community College Consortium is a regional collaboration comprised of nine community colleges in southeast Michigan: Henry Ford, Macomb, Monroe, Mott, Oakland, Schoolcraft, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne County. This consortium is committed to strengthening the workforce of the region by identifying needs, sharing resources, and developing collaborative training solutions to support economic development.

A U.S. Department of Labor Community-Based Job Training Grant (CBJT) was awarded in December 2006 to nine Southeast Michigan Community Colleges, collectively called the Southeast Michigan Community College Consortium (SMC3). Washtenaw Community College was named the fiduciary college. The goal of these nine community colleges is to share resources and knowledge in order to build institutional capacity to educate new and current workers.

The collaboration among these colleges will result in the development of shared Centers of Expertise and curricula focused on innovative Advanced Manufacturing or Alternative Energy education with the following projected benefits to students and workers:

  • become more technically capable and flexible in industry required work skills.
  • develop broader problem solving skills.
  • acquire stronger business acumen and communication skills.
  • understand concepts of becoming more innovative in the workplace.
  • demonstrate highly effective leadership behaviors, process disciplines, entrepreneurial and inventive approaches in driving consumer satisfaction through globally competitive products and services.
